This machine is not too different from most LIchen farms. The main difference is the use of an observer to detect when a player breaks the Lichen.
No redstone clocks, levers, pressure plates or buttons. The observer and a few dust is enough to send a signal to the dispensers.
When the Lichen breaks the dispensers fire some bonemeal to regrow it. Aim your shears at the observer and hold left click. The Lichen will regrow fast enough that you can continue holding down left click until you have enough Lichen or your shears break. No need to put efficiency on the shears as then they would break the Lichen faster than it regrows and then you might break the observer accidently.
Here is what the farm looks like before fitting it into a build;
Not much to it. Observer that links redstone dust to 4 dispensers. The lower dispenser has the main Lichen on its face. This Lichen does not break and is the one the farm uses for growing. more.
Hopper minecarts pick up fast so is the best choice for collection, leading into a hopper then to a chest.
That is the farm and now to put some blocks around it;
By standing on the chest and walking up to the wall block you will not be able to see or break the lowest Lichen accidently. Again, hold left click at the observer until you are finished. Having a closed area around the Lichen also keeps the broken Lichen in the farm for collection.
There is nothing to turn on or off, the machine is always ready. Unless it is out of bonemeal.
