My excavation skill is like 82 and is still going up as i am clearing a large area. Every now and then another skill will go up. Does leveling up skills actually do anything or is it just there to say "Hey I've got this lvl in this skill"?

Are there any chat moderators that are ever on? I was just playing and asked about the chat mods and was told only 1 is on and they never reply to anyone.
